Born and bred in a lower-middle-class family, Goh Wei Jing grew up believing her life was destined to be mundane, until she decided to pursue a career in music. It was not an easy journey. The first steps in her musical voyage were dogged by the strict regime of a fierce piano teacher and she almost quit entirely. During her undergraduate years, she had to juggle two part-time jobs and also study for exams, on top of countless hours on the keys. As challenging as it was, she never gave up on her dream. Thanks to her family, dedicated teachers, supportive fellow students, the kindness of strangers and some good fortune, she eventually became the first Asian student in her college, the Dundalk Institute of Technology, to receive a scholarship to pursue a master’s degree. Today she is a full-time music teacher, but also accompanies instrumentalists on the piano for their concerts and exams and plays for special occasions like weddings. This is a story about how a once-shy girl profoundly changed her life for the better by following her heart and pursuing her dreams.
