The kingdom of Cornucopia was once the happiest in the world. It had plenty of gold, a king with the finest moustaches you could possibly imagine, and butchers, bakers and cheesemongers whose exquisite foods made a person dance with delight when they ate them.

Everything was perfect – except for the misty Marshlands to the north which, according to legend, were home to the monstrous Ickabog. Anyone sensible knew that the Ickabog was just a myth, to scare children into behaving. But the funny thing about myths is that sometimes they take on a life of their own.

Could a myth unseat a beloved king? Could a myth bring a once happy country to its knees? Could a myth thrust two children into an adventure they didn’t ask for and never expected?
If you’re feeling brave, step into the pages of this book to find out…

RECOMMENDED

The book themes include bravery over fear, the importance of truth, the dangers of greed, and love conquering hate. A great children's book which adults could enjoy as well. The lighter variety with lessons to learned and delightful characters you can relate to. I enjoy reading the book.

Great children book

While JKR now writes mainly adult thriller books, her greatest strength remains in writing children books, where her imagination is really allowed to roam free. She already released this book chapter by chapter for free on her website during the 2020 lockdown but now she releases the physical book with all the royalties going to charities that helps to fight Covid-19 crisis globally. A great book by a great author.

The best book

Yeah, on reflection I’m not going to be able to keep reading this. The author keeps doubling down on transphobic rhetoric that’s harmful and I can’t in good conscience enjoy a lighthearted children’s story in that context.
