That was amazing. It helps to have read the series as there are so many characters and backstories. There's more ethics, philosophy, Scottish poets, Glasgow vs Edinburgh (sp?) rivalry and prejudices, art, archaeology, canine behavior, architecture, anthropology, social mores, and more I've missed than can be imagined. I guess that might not go down well with all readers. But for McCall afficianados, it's everything
Such a delight to read. The characters are exquisite. The stories are humorous and gentle, and the characters likeable and human
The author is particularly good at drawing characters who vary along the dimensions of insightfulness and empathy, ranging from the woefully clueless and narcissistic to the wise and generously caring. Most enjoyable.
