Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother is a story about a mother, two daughters, and two dogs. It was supposed to be a story of how Chinese parents are better at raising kids than Western ones. But instead, it's about a bitter clash of cultures, a fleeting taste of glory, and how you can be humbled by a thirteen-year-old. Witty, entertaining and provocative, this is a unique and important book that will transform your perspective of parenting forever.
I remember reading this and thinking "Omg! I am so lucky that I didn't have to go through this kind of upbringing!". But, such as it is, that a lot of Asian parents push their little ones so hard; for the sake of self glory and "having face" in the society. This mindset that we have to be the best in everything isn't apparent only in the US, but also in Singapore, and Malaysia. Sure, there have been many success stories but do we all need to lose ourselves and identity in the midst of them all? I feel that having an ambition to succeed is good, but not at the expense of self-worth, not in the expense that children lose out on creating childhood memories of playing in the sun or attending birthday parties or just reading children's books; instead of just mulling over their musical instruments or textbooks. Not my favourite book to read, in all honesty.
