The protagonist, Alison, has attained professional success as an attorney of the London courts. But her personal life is dangerously close to total collapse: she drinks; she seems to be a binge drinker who is totally out of control. She also is cheating on her husband Carl (a controlling and stoic character, easily dislikeable). She’s also neglecting her 6-year old daughter, Matilda. And her affair with a senior attorney is a source of pure humiliation. No matter how many times Alison vows to clean-up her life, she never can keep the promises to herself. Alison is the lead attorney on a murder case: Her client is woman who has stabbed her husband to death as he slept. Ironically, as the story progresses, Alison can begin to see parallels between herself and her client.
This book has a shocking plot that moves stealthily forward with perfect timing; the author knows exactly when and how to introduce a few harrowing twists. And everything unfolds just perfectly enough to be considered a "jaw dropper" as we learn more. This book is an amazing tribute to the writer’s skill and also a most intriguing read. Don’t miss this one.
