As I reflect on some of the quotes and stories in this book, I think about how my mother is reflected in some of them. How she is similarly thoughful, and loving; sacrificially putting the needs of her children (and late husband) before her own and how she seems to have an answer to every problem or questions that we have. Well, sometimes I think she makes up her own answers and sometimes, to be honest, they can be over-bearing.
One of the stories that struck me recently is the one by Sandy M. Smith with the title "Seven Sticks". Growing up, Sandy thought that her mother never liked gum as the gums in the pack was always distributed to just her dad, her siblings and herself. Her mum never had any. As it turns out, it was because there were only seven pieces of gum in that pack.There weren't enough.
My mum's like that, the family may grow, and the portion on the plate will increase, but it always seemed that mum doesn't eat much. I'm not sure if it's just out habit or that, mum is still saving up to give the best to her children and grandchildren, even when there's plenty to go around.
Nowadays, I will conciously eat lesser too, so that in turn, my nieces and my mum will still have some 'extras' to eat coz I think they deserve them just as much.
