This is an unusual, blunt and amusing biography of one of Malaysia's unsing heroes, Sambanthanathan (Sam) Underwood). Born in Ceylon, now Sri Lanka, he arrived in Penang in early childhood, saw his best friend killed during a Japanese bombing attack while they were sitting their final examinations, was sentenced to death and reprieved by the Japanese, worked with the Japanese as an educator during their occupation of Malaya, fled for his life back to Ceylon to escape Communist retirbution for his war time role, retrained as a doctor, returned to Malaya to run a practice that healed the sick and injured of whatever political persuasion during the 'Emergency', and then settled into running one of the largest private clinics in the country where rich and poor were treated without distinction.
