Kuala Lumpur: AB&A, 2010. First edition. Hardcover. New. New. The author, a former British diplomat now living and working in Malaysia, appears to be drawn to aspects of Penang history that are often missed by others. Firstly he tackled Penang under the East India Company and now Penang during and between the two World Wars. After much archival work both in Malaysia and the UK and interviews with Peanangites who lived through these times, Andrew Barber has been able to comprehensively chronicle the economic, military and social ups and downs which still reverberate in Penang to this day. The 152 page book is illustrated with colour and black and white photographs and ends with appendix listing the names of Japanese who served in Penang and were convicted at war crimes trials, a bibliography and population, trade, shipping and taxation appendices.
