Peranakan Folk Songs & Rhymes

Peranakan nursery rhymes, household rhymes, kitchen rhymes, phonic rhymes, even rude and flirtatious rhymes, also pious chants and folk songs. Matthew Lloyd Tan preserves a collection of these in this book.

In the past, most Baba Malay rhymes and songs were transmitted orally, with some songs which share a heritage in Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore found on phonograph records and as movie music.

Yet, most of these songs and rhymes are in danger of being lost. 

But they will survive if they are learnt, used appropriately, and imparted. By doing so, contemporary Peranakan life and the multiracial fabric of society will be enriched.
