By understanding the principle of fire, the stages of fire growth in a building, and the science of fire, building management will be able to enhance the ability of people to deal effectively with a situation when a fire broke out in the building. This book discusses the issues related to the provision of escape route in high-rise buildings, particularly in the high-rise residential buildings. The provision of escape route as regulated in the Uniform Building By-Laws (Malaysia) and The Building Regulation (United Kingdoms) are referred. The escape route specifications, such as staircase risers and treads, the specification of handrail, computing the staircase width and a number of staircases to be provided in the high-rise buildings are discussed. In addition, the provision of fire doors, emergency exit signage, and alternative exit routes are included. Fire safety management and step-by-step fire safety risk assessment on buildings are deliberated based on the fire safety risk analysis developed by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and Fire Protection Association, United Kingdom. The purpose of fire risk assessment is to assist an employer in complying with the regulation regarding the provision of safe workplace. This compliance is crucial to those who may be affected by the work activities in their premises. It is expected that building designers will benefit the most in terms of escape routes design and specifications as a reference in designing of escape routes in high-rise buildings. Other professionals such as fire safety engineers, quantity surveying, contractors, lecturers and students in related fields may benefit from this book.
