Tan Kim Seng was a third-generation Malacca native who migrated to Singapore in the early 1820s. His strong business acumen and trusted partnerships with British merchants propelled him to amass a vast real-estate empire, which spanned from Pasir Panjang to Tanglin. His civic contributions were equally noteworthy: he founded Chong Wen Ge, the first Chinese school in 1849; helped mitigate the 1854 secret society riots; and donated funds to improve the city’s waterworks—donations immortalized by the iconic Tan Kim Seng Fountain.
The biography also explores his carefully constructed will, designed to ward off “the curse of the third generation”—a testament to his forward-thinking values that were later disrupted by colonial legal systems.
