Ornamentation in the art and architecture of the Islamic world has attracted researchers as well as illuminators for Centuries. Yet few specialist scholars have studied in depth the subject of the stylised plant motifs known as arabesque. In this publication, The Arabesque: An Introduction, the Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia (IAMM) seeks to draw greater attention to the importance of vegetal ornament, which has spread over the Islamic world for well over a thousand years, and attempts to trace its development, at the same time revealing aspects of its meaning and symbolism in the Islamic decorative repertoire.
