Most military thinkers in the years leading up to World War II saw the airplane as an afterthought. But a small band of idealistic strategists had a different view. This "Bomber Mafia" asked: What if precision bombing could, just by taking out critical choke points - industrial or transportation hubs - cripple the enemy and make war far less lethal? In The Bomber Mafia, Gladwell delves deep into questions of how technology and best intentions collide in the heat of war.
Page-turning account of the psyche that gripped an erstwhile overlooked arm of the American defence machine, and the human compassion that actually - surprisingly - went into what later derailed into an atrocity against mankind.
The Bomber Mafia (US)
The Bomber Mafia is an interesting book and kind of a deep dive into a very specific part of history. Recommended.
What a captivating, horrifying brilliantly-told story of now precision bombing came to be and change WW2 and the way we engage today. Malcolm Gladwell is masterful storyteller. This book definitely a good pick!
What an awesome read. A great breakdown as to why target bombing failed, mostly late against German and more so against Japan and what was learned from it. Plus, what psychological shift was needed in leadership to move to widespread fire bombing and why it was necessary or at least justified during the time period. Read this book if you want to get into the mind of why certain equipment and decision on its use were made as it related to bombing......fascinating read.
