I admit I picked this up as a whim, but all my expectations were exceeded while reading this. It started out tame enough, and I had thought that it was just another variation of the YA themes I've read about, but the book proved me wrong by the end. I loved learning about the Native Indian community in Sugar Island and appreciated all the insights that Bouley brought to the book. This was such an amazing book that took turns I did not expect, and it also highlighted the insidious racism and misogynism that still pervades the Native Indian communities living in the US & Canada today. I'm very glad I picked this book up, and I hope no one else does this book a discourtesy as writing this book off as just another YA book (as I almost did). Highly recommended.
The protagonist, Daunis such an appealing character. This book was just amazing, pure, simple yet detailed, beautifully written, and addicting until I finished in just one sitting.
