The Suicide Journal: A Journey through Facts to Understanding reflects the author's personal journey that combines facts, resources and the feelings of survivors with journaling to better understand suicide. Survivors are those who have lived beyond their own suicidal ideation, those who have lost someone to suicide, someone who has a loved one who suffers with suicidal thoughts and those that suffer with these thoughts themselves. The goals of the book are to provide an outlet for the reader to journal their feelings, for them to learn little-known facts about suicide, to provide a substantial number of resources and to aid in the readers' understanding of what those who have taken their own life might have been going through. Though this is not a solution manual, as the author is sharing her journey and not her expertise. This book is a journey beyond confusion, through facts, to a better understanding of suicide.
For this book the author added resources, researched facts, prompts to engage the reader and journal entries for six questions that the author pondered. The questions were:
Journal Entry 1: How does suicide affect the rich and famous?
Journal Entry 2: How does suicide affect the rest of us?
Journal Entry 3: What are some worldwide suicide statistics?
Journal Entry 4: What are some reasons people choose suicide?
Journal Entry 5: Are there any suicide warning signs and prevention tips?
Journal Entry 6: What are ways to carefully monitor my own feelings?
Not only were these questions answered, but through research, many more were answered. As the reader ventures though this book, the hope is that it helps to answer questions about suicide. There are prompts throughout this book that are here to engage the reader in thought. There are resources provided throughout the book and on either end. These resources are both general resources and community specific. There is no one solution to preventing suicide, but the goal is to be aware and prepared to help oneself and others.
