The Wild Robot by Peter Brown
The Wild Robot
The first book in the Wild Robot series sees ROZZUM unit 7134 or "Roz" activating on a wild, remote island. Intending to survive, Roz learns from and befriends the native wildlife and even adopts an orphaned gosling. An interesting and heartwarming take on what an intelligent robot would do if it found itself in the wilderness: learn how to fit in, as we should when we find ourselves in unfamiliar territory.
The Wild Robot Escapes
Taken from her island and patched up, Roz the robot is sold to a family and put to work on their farm. Roz longs to return to the wild, but it seems the farmer's family needs her as well. Readers may end up pondering their relationship with and reliance on technology while empathising with Roz's dilemma: she has gained sentience, but to others that makes her a faulty product. Do you "fix" something that might not be broken?
The Wild Robot Protects
Roz the robot is back on the island with her wild family, but an external threat compels Roz to make a perilous journey across the sea and into an upcoming conflict between sea creatures and humans. The story is a little dark as it's about an environment threatened by man-made pollution and the notion that nature and technology cannot co-exist. But if a robot thinks there might be a way, what about us?
