While a student prepares for examinations in study subjects like Chemistry and Geography by revising and re-revising them to fix the knowledge gained in mind, a proven way he/she can prepare for the examination in English is by attempting practice papers. These EXAM PRACTICE PAPERS are intended to provide just that practice that is necessary for answering the different questions in the examination with confidence and ease. These tests are set on the current examination format. There is a variety of questions in the GRAMMAR AND USAGE section (Section B of Paper 2) to enable the student to become familiar with practically all types of questions set in the examination.
These practice papers are to be attempted at intervals, preferably proceeding from the first to the last. The student is strongly recommended to compare his/her answers with the Model Answers. Model Answers are provided for all questions set, including the composition questions in Section A of Paper 1 and the questions in Section B of Paper 1. The compositions provided are slightly longer than the length stipulated in the syllabus and the student’s composition is not expected to reach this length. It will be rewarding to look up the new words the student comes across in the Model Answers in the dictionary. Thus the student will be able to enrich his/her vocabulary. The Model Compositions also attempt to expose the student to ideas and to show how to approach given topics. Generally, students choose topics that require narration. Hence each test paper contains a story question. Ideas for these stories can be drawn from ordinary, everyday experience.
In Paper 2 ( Section A ), there are two passages for the comprehension test. There are multiple-choice questions and free-response questions to answer. There is also a question that requires the student to give the meaning of words as used in the passage.
If these test papers prepare the student to do his/her best in the examination, the effort in setting them will not have been in vain. Practise in order to progress towards perfection.
