The Republic of Gilead offers Offred only one function: to breed. If she deviates, she will, like dissenters, be hanged at the wall or sent out to die slowly of radiation sickness. But even a repressive state cannot obliterate desire - neither Offred's nor that of the two men on which her future hangs. Brilliantly conceived and executed, this powerful evocation of twenty-first century America gives full rein to Margaret Atwood's devastating irony, wit and astute perception.

A Modern Classic

A harrowing read, and what's more chilling is when Atwood reveals that everything that happened to women in this book happened to real women somewhere at some point. A sobering realization of the fragility of women's liberation, and how important it is to safeguard it vigilantly.

This is an amazing book. This is a story about surviving in a cruel and devastated world. And there's a woman trying hard to cope with her loss, worries, and a new life. For me, the scene was extremely vivid and inventive.
